Business Programs
Canadian Women in Action (BCW) offers Business Programs to support entrepreneurs, professionals, and aspiring business owners at every stage of their journey. Our initiatives include business development training, mentorship, networking, and leadership programs designed to foster economic empowerment, business growth, and career advancement. We provide the resources and support needed to achieve self-sufficiency and financial independence, whether launching a new venture or expanding an existing business. Through partnerships with industry leaders and community organizations, BCW is dedicated to empowering women and strengthening communities across Canada.
Community Programs
Canadian Women in Action (BCW) is dedicated to building stronger, healthier, and more inclusive communities by empowering women, youth, newcomers, families, and underserved populations. We focus on education, skills development, cultural integration, and wellness programs to help individuals connect and improve their quality of life. Our initiatives address community needs while promoting social inclusion, personal growth, and civic participation. By providing supportive environments, we enable participants to gain the confidence and resources to positively impact their communities. Partnering with community organizations and stakeholders, BCW delivers programs that foster belonging, resilience, and long-term community development across Canada.

Agribusiness
Sown in Power is a food sovereignty initiative led by Black women, empowering Black and BIPOC communities through sustainable food growing, knowledge sharing, and leadership development. Rooted in community and resilience, the program creates opportunities for women to strengthen food security, build skills, and cultivate lasting change.

Artificial Intelligence Advantage Business
The Artificial Intelligence Advantage Business Workshop, developed by Canadian Women in Action, helps racialized entrepreneurs—especially women—use AI tools to streamline operations, boost productivity, and grow their businesses. It addresses challenges like limited time and resources by providing practical strategies to improve efficiency, support decision-making, and drive sustainable success.

Financial Literacy Training

MacEwan Ventures Program
The MacEwan Ventures Program, a partnership between Canadian Women in Action and MacEwan University, helps aspiring entrepreneurs turn ideas into viable businesses. It provides guidance on validating concepts, understanding markets, and building clear paths to success.
Through hands-on training, mentorship, and practical tools, participants develop skills in business planning, marketing, sales, and pitching to customers and investors.
Focused on empowering women and racialized communities, the program promotes inclusive access to entrepreneurship and is offered at no cost, removing financial barriers to success.

Business Idea Generator
Have you always wanted to start a business but don’t know where to begin? The Business Idea Generator Workshop is designed to help aspiring entrepreneurs discover viable business ideas by identifying everyday problems, unmet needs, and market opportunities. Through interactive activities and practical guidance, participants will learn how to turn observations into innovative business concepts.
Delivered in partnership with MacEwan University School of Business, this workshop is the perfect first step for anyone interested in entrepreneurship. No prior business experience is required—just curiosity, creativity, and a willingness to explore new possibilities. Open to participants of all ages.

Intellectual Property Training
Protect your ideas and unlock their full potential with BCW’s Intellectual Property (IP) Workshop, delivered in collaboration with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO). This interactive session introduces participants to the fundamentals of intellectual property, including trademarks, patents, copyright, industrial designs, and trade secrets. Learn how to safeguard your innovations, strengthen your competitive advantage, and turn your ideas into valuable assets. Whether you're an entrepreneur, creator, or innovator, this workshop will equip you with practical knowledge to protect and grow your work.
Community Programs

Affordable Housing - The Furaha Program
The Furaha provides safe, affordable housing while addressing barriers to stable living. Serving communities across Western Canada, it combines housing with programs that support economic empowerment, well-being, and inclusion.
As Canadian Women in Action’s first housing project, it will deliver 72 affordable units with a 20-year affordability commitment, along with employment opportunities, on-site services, and programs for wellness, entrepreneurship, and newcomer support.

Black Women In STEMM in the Prairies
Black women in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) contribute significantly to Canada’s innovation economy but face deep systemic barriers that limit their recognition, funding, and opportunities.
The goal of the project is to shift the narrative from individual deficits to systemic change, ensuring that Black women in the Prairies can thrive as innovators, leaders, and entrepreneurs.

L’organisme Femmes noires canadiennes en action (BCW en Action) met en œuvre le projet Connexion des Femmes Noires Franco-Albertaines, une initiative communautaire visant à favoriser l’inclusion sociale, culturelle et économique des femmes francophones nouvellement arrivées à Edmonton et Calgary.

Conversation Cafe
Our Conversation Café is a welcoming, inclusive space designed to support both French and English language learners. This program brings together participants from both official language backgrounds— Francophones who are new to English and English speakers learning French—to practice in a relaxed, supportive environment.

Culinary Arts - Empowerment
The Collective Kitchen program is a community initiative in which participants from the Civida Youngstown community and surrounding areas come together to plan, cook, and share nutritious, affordable meals to take home to their families. This program is proudly partnered with AmityHouse and BCW Organization to empower women through cooking, community, and skills development.

S.T.E.A.M
At Canadian Women in Action, we’ve seen how S.T.E.A.M. education empowers young women and girls to reach their full potential.
Through our Black Girls Empowerment Initiative, in partnership with NorQuest College, the University of Alberta, and the Canadian Women’s Foundation, we launched a free program that inspires young Black girls through hands-on learning, mentorship, and exposure to S.T.E.A.M. careers.
By connecting participants with successful women in these fields, the program celebrates Black excellence and encourages the next generation to dream bigger and achieve more.

Strong Hands, Safe Homes
The Strong Hands, Safe Homes Program equips women—particularly newcomer and Black women—with practical, income-generating skills that promote economic independence and household stability.
Created to address barriers to employment and access to skills training, the program provides hands-on, culturally relevant learning opportunities that empower participants to build confidence, strengthen their financial well-being, and create safer, more stable futures for themselves and their families.

Gender Based Violence Initiative
Our Gender-Based Violence (GBV) initiative uses storytelling, education, and community engagement to raise awareness, support survivors, and drive systemic change. Through powerful video content and programming, we aim to break the silence around GBV, foster healing, and empower individuals and communities to take meaningful action against all forms of gender-based violence.

Leadership Summer Camp
The Leadership Summer Camp empowers youth with the confidence, skills, and mindset needed to become future leaders in their schools, communities, and beyond. Through interactive workshops, team-building activities, mentorship, and personal development experiences, participants discover their strengths, build leadership capacity, and unlock their full potential.

W.A.G.E Anti-Racism
Supported by Women and Gender Equality Canada, the project engaged women professionals in Alberta’s health care, social work, and education sectors. Through surveys, focus groups, and interviews, participants identified barriers such as inconsistent EDI practices, underrepresentation of Black and racialized in senior roles, and challenges in recruitment processes. Findings are being used to design industry-specific training modules, strengthen organizational culture, and develop sustainable anti-racism strategies to advance equity across Alberta’s workforce.
Looking ahead, the project will expand partnerships with educational institutions and industry leaders to pilot these strategies, ensuring long-term impact and broader application across Canada

Youth Mental Wellness & Personal Development
Our Youth Mental Wellness & Personal Development Sessions create a safe, supportive, and empowering space for Black youth to strengthen their mental well-being, build confidence, and develop essential life skills for both personal and professional success.
Facilitated by passionate experts and delivered virtually via Zoom, these sessions are designed to inspire growth, self-expression, and resilience while equipping participants with practical tools for the future.

Black Girls Conner
Black girls aged 12 to 15 to create a unique space for young and socialize, learn and share. BGC engages girls through four pillars of interpersonal development: Self-Care, Self- Image, Empowerment, and Development. Through learning and shared culture and heritage, BGC creates opportunities for social participation while promoting inclusion for visible minority Black girls.

Black Girls Leadership
Black girls (mentees), in grades 10 to 12, with Black female professionals (mentors) to strengthen their leadership skills and provide them with a positive role model. This ultimately connects mentees with Black women with experience in their field of interest.

Inner Child Series
Young girls and boys ages 6 to 11 aims to mobilize and provide them with a safe place to learn, share, explore and appreciate the world of art. Focused on leadership, art and mental health, the program encourages young boys and girls to develop a better relationship with their inner voice, this is done through participation in creative activities.

Afro Dance Classes
The Afro Dance program linked women to African culture via dance, fostering self-expression, body confidence, and empowerment.

Black Women Excellence
Black Women Excellence is a program for Women ages 18-29.
This program offers young women with career training, internship/practicum opportunities, volunteering programs to acquire skills and experiences and networking with their peers and other sectors across Canada.

Life & Wellness Coaching
Through hands-on workshops such as self-portrait art, T-shirt design, and beading, participants expressed their creativity while celebrating their identity and heritage. The program also included focus groups with health professionals, teachers, and social workers, as well as parenting workshops on raising brave and resilient children, offering practical tools for personal growth and community engagement.

Strengthened Family Program
This initiative is especially valuable for newcomer women, guiding Canadian family law, values, and practices while creating a safe space to share experiences. By combining intergenerational dialogue with practical knowledge, the program equips families with tools for problem-solving, conflict prevention, and mutual understanding.

Hair and Beauty Workforce Integration
The Hair & Beauty Workforce Integration Program is designed to support newcomer women who are interested in building a career in the hair and beauty industry.
Starting in January 2027, participants will receive hands-on training in hairstyling, braiding, and natural hair care while also developing English communication skills, Canadian workplace knowledge, and employment readiness.
This free program helps women build confidence, strengthen professional skills, and explore both employment and entrepreneurship opportunities.
