BCW Sown in Power Initiative

A Living Project Rooted in Land, Community, and Innovation

Sown in Power is a food sovereignty initiative led by Black women, grounded in land, legacy, and empowerment.
Born from a call for safe space and shared solutions, we build on the strength of Black and BIPOC women to grow food, grow knowledge, and grow futures.
As we expand across provinces and borders, we remain rooted in our founding truth: that real change starts where women are heard, held, and empowered to lead.

Advancing Food Sovereignty with Black Women in Alberta

BCW is actively working on a community-led project dedicated to improving food sovereignty for Black and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour) women across Alberta. Centered around land access, traditional knowledge, and emerging technologies, this initiative uplifts the strategies and leadership of BIPOC women to reclaim power in local food systems.

A Space for Learning and Collaboration

This work is also about generating learnings that can inform wider efforts to address food inequity. Through hands-on practice, storytelling, and reflection, we are building a model that:

  • Prioritizes community-defined food systems.

  • Deepens connections to land and wellness.

  • Creates tools and knowledge for future initiatives led by and for Black and BIPOC women.

Grounded in Community Wisdom

This project is shaped by the knowledge and resilience of Black and BIPOC women who have long stewarded the land and cultivated community. It expands on their work by supporting efforts in:

  • Land-Based Food Production and beyond
Utilizing land to grow food that is culturally meaningful, nutritious, and locally rooted.

  • Community Gardening
Supporting shared spaces for growing, learning, and community-building.

  • Agricultural Initiatives & Innovation
Integrating technology and new practices to support sustainable growing methods and climate resilience.

Seeking Support and Resources

To deepen the impact of this work, we are actively seeking resources and partnerships that align with our values. We welcome:

  • Access to land or gardening space

  • Tools, seeds, and infrastructure support

  • Funding and capacity-building opportunities

  • Collaborations with like-minded organizations or individuals

If you or your organization are interested in supporting this work, we would love to connect.
