Active Women

About

The Active Women’s Program (AWP) aims to promote the holistic wellness of Black women through sessions and events focused on mental, social, and physical wellbeing. The programming mainly consists of life & wellness coaching sessions and webinars, as well as Afro dance classes.

The program participants are able to take a break from life’s stresses and responsibilities to pour back into themselves and gain a better understanding of how mental health affects their day to day lives, and learn strategies to promote their health and wellbeing while connecting over their common experiences.

The workshops are informal and involve women from different communities and the topics are geared towards being active. These workshops are led by women from these various communities which allow for free expression of thoughts.

Women attend workshops and various expression clinics. Here, they find logistical support, advice from experienced members of the community, mutual help and sharing that allows for revival and creativity, the revelation of vocations and the realization of interests in various activities and projects.

Programs

  • Afro Dance Classes

  • Black Women Excellence

Black Women Excellence is a program for Women ages 18-29.

This program offers young women with career training, internship/practicum opportunities, volunteering programs to acquire skills and experiences and networking with their peers and other sectors across Canada.

  • Empowerment By Culinary Art

Newcomers, low-income families, and Civida tenants come together to plan, cook, and share nutritious and affordable meals while gaining knowledge in practical cooking techniques, meal planning, budgeting, and food sustainability. Each session also creates opportunities for dialogue, reflection, and guidance, offering participants a safe and supportive space to exchange ideas and build friendships.

  • Wage Anti-Racism Project

The project engaged women professionals in Alberta’s health care, social work, and education sectors.
